A Plan for Illegal Dumping Prevention

A proactive illegal dumping prevention plan is crucial.

Illegal dumping is a bigger problem than most of us realize, with its pestilence affecting communities nationwide who grapple with its environmental and economic fallout. The concern isn’t just that it creates an ugly sight, it’s a public health hazard and a tremendous sap on financial resources, as seen recently in Philadelphia.

According to a CBS News Philadelphia report on August 28, 2025, the city spends an estimated $2 million annually on cleanup alone. The problem is so bad that residents feel the city is losing its battle, with one resident stating after it was cleaned up that “[the trash is] back again the same way.”  Story highlight: 450 surveillance cameras were installed, yet illegal dumping remains highly problematic.

The obstacle in Philadelphia shows how surveillance is often a reactionary approach, with evidence collected after the incident happens. While it can be helpful for getting some evidence, it doesn’t fix this core issue: Stopping the crime from happening in the first place. Clearly, a new game plan for illegal dumping prevention is paramount here.

For far too long cities have been playing the famous game of catch-up.
