Stop Illegal Dumping-Stop Rats!

Stop Illegal Dumping-Stop Rats!

Illegal dumping sites are a massive problem in our country. There are few, if any barriers to prevent criminals from depositing their waste wherever they wish. Even in high profile locations such as downtown Los Angeles, there are literally entire blocks which are filled to the brim with an ocean of trash. And the ocean of trash is not simply unpleasant to look at, it brings its own host of dangers!

One danger in particular is the breeding of rats! The United States Environmental Protection Agency has noted that decomposing garbage provides both food and a habitat for rodents, worst of all rats. The rats which take up residence in illegal dumping sites are terrifyingly effective disease spreaders. Rats often carry hantavirus and the plague. The hantavirus is especially contagious because people can contract it by simply breathing the air which is contaminated with the virus. This means that anyone who comes near an illegal dump site is at high risk for contracting a deadly disease. The viruses, which rats carry, make illegal dumpsites deadly for communities.

Unless the illegal dumping is stopped, the problem will only get worse because the rats will continue to breed. The rats’ breeding is nearly unstoppable due to the shelter and nourishment they receive from the dump sites. The best way to solve the rat problem is to solve the illegal dumping problem. However, as already stated, there are hardly any barriers in place which can halt the criminal activity.

The best solution for this disgusting problem is illegal dumping cameras. These cameras are specially designed to be used in remote areas where networking is difficult. These high-resolution cameras capture prosecutable evidence!

Clean up dump sites, stop illegal dumping, and say goodbye to rats!

What is Illegal Dumping and Why Does it Need to Be Stopped?

Illegal dumping is the disposal of waste outside of the laws established. Instead of using an authorized method such as curbside collection or an authorized rubbish drop off, people take their bulk items such as appliances, mattresses, and demolition items to remote areas. It is easy to think people illegally depose of their appliances and large bulky items because they are thoughtless of the environment, but what if they are not aware of the environmental hazards they create?

With illegal dumping, there are multiple serious consequences that come along with it. Dump piles not only pollute the community and the environment, but they also attract diseased insects and animals, such as mosquitoes and rats. These critters are dangerous because they carry disease, and it does not take long for the disease to spread to the citizens among the community. Illegal dumping is a critical issue that needs to be stopped immediately before it infects your community.

What can be done to stop the problem of illegal dumping?

Create an Illegal Dumping Program in your Community.

  • Educate: The first step is to educate the community.

  • Involve the Community: Hotlines should be available to report incidents of hotspots.

  • Provide convenient drop off sites.

  • Implement programs for bulk Item disposal.

  • Install Illegal Dumping Cameras: Illegal Dumping Cameras are designed to capture license plates, in complete darkness in remote areas.

  • Create laws with increased penalties.

Illegal Dumping Solution

Illegal Dumping Solution

With millions more people staying at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, people are noticing the unnecessary clutter in their homes. The cost to properly dispose of unwanted clutter can be steep.  The average cost of disposing of furniture or other major appliances is $250, but could be as much as $800. Unfortunately, waste removal expenses easily add up to thousands of dollars, for people wanting to clear out years-worth of old furniture from their homes. Rather than pay such a hefty sum for trash disposal, thousands of people have decided to adopt a criminal lifestyle by illegally dumping their unwanted junk.

It is good that people are taking initiative in tidying up their homes, but the way in which they dispose their trash is far from okay.

During the pandemic, the rate of illegal dumping has increased across the United States, especially in California. In Los Angeles alone, there has been a 19% increase in 311 requests to remove illegally dumped trash. Due to the conditions caused by the pandemic, people everywhere are more likely to engage in illegal dumping.

With the massive increase of illegal dumpers across the nation, cities need to step up their game, because illegal dumping causes disease, lower property value, and a lower quality of life.

What is a community to do to stop this illegal dumping problem? Cities need to formulate an Illegal Dumping Program to combat this crisis.

An Illegal Dumping Program:

  • Educate: Inform your community about the dangers of Illegal Dumping

  • Enable: partner with the community and other departments within the city to stand up against illegal dumping

Fortunately, there is solution to end illegal dumping.

Illegal Dumping Affects Property Tax

Illegal Dumping Affects Property Tax

Illegal dumping is more than just an ugly sight to behold. It is dangerous, and It is also very costly. Because illegal dumping poses a very serious health risk to the surrounding residents and wildlife, city officials cannot stand idly by, ignoring the crime. They must do everything in their power to clean the dumping sites and protect their city. However, it is a very expensive endeavor to clean up illegal dumping, “Cleaning up, monitoring, and enforcing instances of illegal dumping cost taxpayers a significant amount of money each year. The EPA mentions that some urban areas in the U.S. spend ‘several million dollars per year on cleanup, hauling, and disposal’ of illegally dumped wastes.”

Illegal dumping costs cities millions of dollars each year to clean up. Cities make up for this cost by taxing their residents. In addition to this, illegal dumping lowers the value of homes due to aesthetics and safety concerns, and therefore lowers the revenue of cities, making economies suffer all around.

TO PREVENT ILLEGAL DUMPING:

  • Install fencing in abandoned areas.
  • Involve the community to help educate the citizens.
  • Increase illegal dumping fines.
  • Implement the use of illegal dumping cameras.

Officials should be diligent about stopping illegal dumping to protect their cities’ revenue.
