Illegal Dumping Attracts Crime

Illegal Dumping Attracts Crime

Illegal dumping is an unsightly scene. Fly dumping sites breed bacteria, lower home and business property values, and pose a danger to families living nearby. Did you know illegal dumping grounds also increase the crime to the affected community?

In some instances, the additional crime is more dumping such as abandoned trash, tires, and mattresses in a vacant lot. People assuming a few more tires or broken pieces of furniture added to the junkyard will not make much of a difference, thus adding to the fly dumping pile.

An essay on the effects of illegal dumping to Lawrence, PA states that one improperly disposed article can cause a “chain reaction” to your community in many harmful ways.

Amongst this “chain link” of fly dumping, is the attraction of illegal drugs and drug manufacturers. Harmful and highly dangerous narcotics are often the types of drugs that are drawn in by illegal dumping. Drug related articles found thrown into the garbage pile at the site are meth lab materials and heroin needles.

In addition to destroying community pride, fly dumping also attracts gatherings of rowdy people that behave in an unwanted manner. Disorderly teenagers often find illegal dumping sites to be “fun” hangout sites and sometimes take to vandalizing nearby homes and parks as part of their group activities

So, what are communities to do to prevent this chain reaction? They cannot simply believe the perpetrators will suddenly stop fly dumping and clean up the litter. Communities must make an investment in an illegal dumping prevention program.

  • Educate the Community
  • Enable the Community
  • Equip your Staff
  • Enforce the Laws
  • Use Evidence & Prosecute with Illegal Dumping Cameras

Such investments are necessary to protect the safety of the community and prevent other crimes in the neighborhoods. It is possible for the chain link of crimes to be broken. Break the link!

Illegal Dumping and Depression

Illegal Dumping and Depression

It is commonly understood that your environment can affect your mood. But did you know depression is linked to illegal dumping? People who live in nice, clean cities are less likely to experience depression than people who live in communities surrounded by trash. People who live near common illegal dumping sites are more likely to experience anxiety and depression. However, did you know that people who reside near illegal dumping areas are also more likely to experience violent anger as well as depression? This is because depression and violence are often closely linked. This means that people who live near illegal dumping grounds are subject to violent danger in addition to depression.

Here are measures to take to stop illegal dumping in your community:

  • Educate the community:
    • Social Media
    • Billboards

What it Takes to Fight Illegal Dumping

What it Takes to Fight Illegal Dumping

Illegal dumping is not only unsightly and unpleasant, but very unhygienic. The carelessness of illegal dumping is disposed of in such a way that it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses, causing people to become ill and pick up nasty infections. However, fly dumping sights are also a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Where the viruses and bacteria may sit and multiply on the disarray of  tires and abandoned furniture, mosquitos carry bacteria and viruses to people 1-3 miles away. Some mosquitoes have been discovered to have traveled up to 7 miles from their original breeding spots and around 20-40 miles when food sources are scarce.

Among the infectious viruses and diseases mosquitoes carry are: Dengue Fever, West Nile Virus, and Zika Virus. Some of which are known to cause birth defects, infertility and even death.

When mosquitoes are choosing a nesting-ground for their larva, they search for a home that is wet, warm, and wasted. The neglected sites of illegal dumping lots are the perfect breeding place for these creatures.

So how can communities protect themselves against these infectious mosquitoes? What does it take to fight illegal dumping?

  • Educate: Inform your community about the dangers of these viruses and diseases that bugs carry and infect people. Educate on the dangers that illegal dumping brings
  • Enable: Help people stand up against the crime of illegal dumping and fight it by standing together and disciplining those that partake in fly dumping

This is a major problem because mosquitoes are one of the deadliest disease-carrying insects out there.
