Illegal Dumping Sites Spread Disease within the Community

Illegal Dumping Sites Spread Disease within the Community

Illegal dumping, also known as “midnight” dumping, is the term used to describe disposing of waste in unauthorized areas.” Illegal dumping is an environmental crime and depending on the circumstances, this crime could be classified as a misdemeanor or even a felony and the fines can be quite heavy. Some people may think that illegal dumping should not even be classified as a crime and may seem like a dismissible act. However, this is an incredibly faulty conclusion. Illegal dumping is a serious matter because it negatively affects communities and the environment in numerous ways. One of which is the spread of disease.

The accumulation of waste at illegal dumping sites exponentially spreads disease to people in the surrounding area. The reason for this is that illegal dumping sites provide the perfect habitat for disease spreading creatures such as mosquitoes and rodents. Mosquitoes can breed 100 times faster than usual in stagnant water, and dump sites with discarded tires can hold large quantities of stagnant water. Additionally, illegal dumping sites will contaminate any source of water which it comes into contact with. This means that illegal dumping can ruin rivers or ponds, thus making it difficult for communities to access clean water. This also endangers the wildlife. Therefore, illegal dumping spreads disease within communities and is a direct threat to the health of a community.

How do we stop illegal dumping?

The answer: illegal dumping cameras. With so many places where illegal dumping can occur, it is impossible to have an adequate number of hired personnel to monitor all the potential dump sites. But if a community utilizes illegal dumping cameras, they can have eyes and ears in every necessary remote location with minimal personnel. These remote cameras are specially designed to stop illegal dumping.

What is your community doing to stop the spread of disease caused by illegal dumping?

Clean Up Illegal Dumping

Clean Up Illegal Dumping

The cleanliness of a neighborhood plays an enormous role in the life of that neighborhood. Residents of clean neighborhoods reap immense social, psychological, and health related benefits. Regarding social benefits, when residents communally invest in the cleaning and maintenance of their neighborhoods, the pristine condition of their neighborhood can become a great source of pride and encourage more residents to take ownership of their community’s well-being. Large amounts of illegal dumping in neighborhoods is incredibly hazardous to the neighborhood residents because of sharp scrap metal and the fostering of disease spreading rodents and insects. Combating illegal dumping and maintaining the cleanliness of a neighborhood is crucial for families to enjoy the outdoors without fear of their children being injured by stray trash. Cleaning up a neighborhood will provide immediate health benefits to families as it will encourage outdoor play and relieve stress.

The psychological benefits of eliminating illegal dumping are staggering. A study done in Philadelphia showed that the cleanliness of a community has a profound impact on the mental health of its residents, regardless of economic status. When comparing the mental health of residents in impoverished communities, residents, whose community was cleaned and given new vegetation, reported a significant decrease in depression. The presence of illegal dumping in a community creates a sense of hopelessness and defeat in communities because it demonstrates that no one is confronting the crime that is plaguing residents.

If a community wants to show that it cares about its future and wants to preserve its dignity, then illegal dumping must be stopped. Although, such a task is nearly impossible to accomplish by man-power alone. The best solution to cleaning up the streets and keeping them clean is using  Illegal Dumping Cameras. These are specially designed cameras which target illegal dumping. Clean up the neighborhood and stop illegal dumping.

What it Takes to Fight Illegal Dumping

What it Takes to Fight Illegal Dumping

Illegal dumping is not only unsightly and unpleasant, but very unhygienic. The carelessness of illegal dumping is disposed of in such a way that it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses, causing people to become ill and pick up nasty infections. However, fly dumping sights are also a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Where the viruses and bacteria may sit and multiply on the disarray of  tires and abandoned furniture, mosquitos carry bacteria and viruses to people 1-3 miles away. Some mosquitoes have been discovered to have traveled up to 7 miles from their original breeding spots and around 20-40 miles when food sources are scarce.

Among the infectious viruses and diseases mosquitoes carry are: Dengue Fever, West Nile Virus, and Zika Virus. Some of which are known to cause birth defects, infertility and even death.

When mosquitoes are choosing a nesting-ground for their larva, they search for a home that is wet, warm, and wasted. The neglected sites of illegal dumping lots are the perfect breeding place for these creatures.

So how can communities protect themselves against these infectious mosquitoes? What does it take to fight illegal dumping?

  • Educate: Inform your community about the dangers of these viruses and diseases that bugs carry and infect people. Educate on the dangers that illegal dumping brings
  • Enable: Help people stand up against the crime of illegal dumping and fight it by standing together and disciplining those that partake in fly dumping

Stop Illegal Dumping in Neighborhoods

Stop Illegal Dumping in Neighborhoods

When people are dumping trash and other harmful substances it not only effects the environment but also the community it is dumped in. Illegal dumping is becoming an epidemic throughout the United States, especially in lower income cities.

Low income communities are at a disadvantage when it comes to cleaning up their city. According to the University of Michigan, “low income communities are seen as the path of least resistance because they have fewer resources”. Illegal dumping is more prone to happening in low income cities because they cannot afford the standard fees to dispose of the trash legally. There is also a trend of “Outsiders” who travel from different neighborhoods to illegal dispose of their trash not wanting to dirty their own neighborhoods.

These low-income neighborhoods are targets to illegal dumping and it needs to be stopped. There are many things that we can do to help prevent and help save these low-income cities from being targeted.

  • Illegal Dumping Cameras. These cameras help deter crime before it happens. With these cameras, the problem of illegal dumping is combatted.
  • Awareness of illegal dumping. The community should raise awareness of the problem of illegal dumping, through education and using social media platforms.
