Illegal Dumping and Mental Health
Illegal dumping is a unique and vast crime, impacting not just local cities and neighborhoods, but the whole world. Every country suffers from this violation of public space. Illegal dumping casts its torment every chance it gets. Also known as “fly dumping,” plies of trash pose a tremendous health risk, but may have a greater emotional impact on its victims than anyone realized.
Studies show that there may be a correlation between people who are living near dump sites and having to battle with depression, anxiety, and fatigue. Residing near a dumping ground even causes residents to lack concentration. This makes it difficult for students to do well in school resulting in lower grades and a higher dropout rate. It is no wonder that students feel powerless in the battle to succeed under these conditions. There are options to prevent such destruction to local communities.
Although people are not usually cooperative, it is important to continue efforts for the sake of the community.
Here are some suggestions:
- Challenge the community through education and campaigns
- Volunteer Clean Up Days
- No Cost Legal Trash Drop Off Days
- Implement a program that prevents illegal dumping
- Legislation that enforces high penalties for illegally dumping
- Installing an illegal dumping camera at the dumping hot spots
Whatever measures are taken, it is imperative to protect the mental health and success rate of these communities. What is your community doing to prevent illegal dumping?
