The city of Mission purchased high-tech illegal dumping cameras to stop illegal dumping before the hurricane season.  Even if a severe hurricane does not hit, tropical storms with heavy wind and rain during the hurricane season create a lot of debris thrown about. The winds during the season cause damage, creating an overload of trash throughout the community.  If there are areas of unauthorized trash – the trash can be blown into waterways, which is a hazard to the community.

According to the EPA, “Stormwater from dumpsites can contain chemicals that contaminate wells and surface water beyond water quality standards for their designated uses (e.g., drinking water, recreation).”  Every citizen should be concerned about illegal dump sites.  During the hurricane season the risk of water contamination increases if trash from illegal dump sites is blown into the canals, rivers and other water sources.  The decaying debris of plastics, rubber, and heavy metals is absorbed by the soil, where the hazardous material eventually finds its way to the underground water sources.

Municipalities have many choices offered for purchase, however, to defeat the problem of illegal dumping high-tech illegal dumping cameras designed specifically to combat illegal dumping should be used.
