End Illegal Dumping-Plastic Waste

End Illegal Dumping-Plastic Waste

There should be a focus to end illegal dumping and plastic waste.

Plastic Waste is a growing problem in the United States.  Plastic illegally dumped creates a toxic environment for both people and animals.

According to the EPA, plastics still contain polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) –  “forever chemicals.” Therefore, people may be exposed to these PFAS through their drinking water, fish they eat from PFAS – contaminated waters, and through groundwater that has been contaminated by PFAS.  Because PFAS chemicals are almost forever even a small amount builds up in the soil, water and our bodies, which is why they are so dangerous.

While the EPA is doing everything they can to stop the use of these PFAS chemicals, it is still a big concern for the environment.  These forever chemicals are leaching into the soil from the plastics left in unauthorized places creating toxins to enter the soil, food supply, and water sources, and eventually people’s bodies.

Illegal dumping is a major contributor to the PFAs causing an environmental hazard.

This is why it is so important that illegal dumping is stopped and should be a major program in each city.

What does a Successful Illegal Dumping Program look like?

Successful Illegal Dumping Enforcement Program:

  • Education: Educate the community about the PFAs and other environmental hazards illegal dumping causes.
  • Hotlines: For the community to contribute to stopping illegal dumping.
  • Legislation: Strict laws to combat illegal dumping.
  • Enforcement: Enforce, respond, investigate, and prosecute.
  • Staff Resources: Trained staff dedicated to stop the illegal dumping problem.
  • Illegal Dumping Cameras– cameras specifically designed for the war against illegal dumping and the environmental hazards.

Make sure your city has the ability to obtain  prosecutable evidence in dark remote areas, where illegal dumping usually occurs.

End illegal dumping and the plastic waste harming the environment!
