Talking cameras used as theft deterrent

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – You probably don’t know it but hidden cameras are placed in trees all over the city.  Kansas City officials say they’re about to add more.

The next time you take a stroll in the park the city may get a snapshot glimpse of what you’ve been doing, and then tell you if you’ve been naughty or nice.

George Biswell plays Santa Claus for the city’s Parks and Rec department at Christmas.  But the white bearded parks inspector knows if you’ve been bad or good all year round.

You better watch out.  He sees you when you’re not looking via 20-some cameras the city has installed to catch thieves and vandals.

Once the city has your photo, a recording on the camera says “we’ve just taken your picture, enjoy the park and have a nice day.”

The photos develop results.  The city says two men captured were likely getting ready to illegally dump, until they heard they had company.

Another camera’s warning deterred two possible hoodlums from breaking into the city’s Hodge Park Golf Course.  “We've been having major problems getting carts for the course.  I've been here since March and no vandalism,” Andrew Lundberg said.

The city says the eye in the sky can net results in as little as a week.  Cliff Drive used to be littered with trash.  Since the audio cameras went up, the city says it’s now clean.

Cameras will soon be placed where two dogs were mutilated and dumped, as well as places where copper wire has been stolen.

The city has 20 cameras right now and plans to buy six more.
